The GerdQ is a six-item self-administered questionnaire assessing symptoms experienced over the past seven days. It combines typical reflux symptoms, symptoms that make the diagnosis less likely, and two impact questions. It can help structure the assessment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, without replacing clinical diagnosis or investigations when indicated.
Number of questions
6 items
Approximate duration
1 to 2 minutes
Population
Adults visiting primary care for symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux
Modality
patient self-administered questionnaire
Terms of contract
Self-assessment questionnaire completed by the patient based on their symptoms over the past 7 days. Use the official version licensed by AstraZeneca, without altering the wording or response options. Simultaneously check for red flag symptoms (dysphagia, gastrointestinal bleeding, unexplained weight loss), which warrant a medical evaluation regardless of the score.
Score interpretationGERDQ
Sum of the six items scored from 0 to 3 based on frequency (reverse scoring 3, 2, 1, 0 for epigastric pain and nausea); total score ranging from 0 to 18.
Total score
First reading
≥ 8: commonly used threshold, consistent with an increased likelihood of gastro-oesophageal reflux.
Digestive symptoms are non-specific, the response depends on only one week, and some patients require investigations regardless of the score.
