Dermatology
The Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) is an investigator-assessed score used to measure the clinical severity of atopic dermatitis. It combines the intensity of four cutaneous signs with the extent of the lesions across four body regions, weighted according to their relative surface area. The total score ranges from 0 to 72.
Number of questions
4 signs × 4 regions
Approximate duration
5 to 10 minutes
Population
Adults and children with atopic dermatitis (specific regional weighting under 8 years of age)
Modality
assessment by a trained professional
Terms of contract
Score assessed by a trained healthcare professional during a clinical examination: intensity of the four signs and estimated extent across each of the four body regions. Regional coefficients differ for children under 8 years of age. For monitoring, ensure consistency between evaluators and compare with the baseline score (EASI-50, 75, or 90); pruritus is measured separately.
Score interpretationEASI
For each region: (erythema + edema/papulation + excoriations + lichenification) × extent score × regional coefficient (adult: head/neck 0.1; upper limbs 0.2; trunk 0.3; lower limbs 0.4), then sum of the four regions; total score from 0 to 72. The coefficients for head/neck, upper limbs, trunk, and lower limbs are respectively 0.1 / 0.2 / 0.3 / 0.4 from 8 years of age, and 0.2 / 0.2 / 0.3 / 0.3 under 8 years of age.
Total score
First reading
Continuous score from 0 to 72, higher with greater severity; EASI-50, EASI-75, or EASI-90: improvement of at least 50%, 75%, or 90% from baseline score.
It requires training/inter-rater consistency and does not capture all the dimensions experienced by the patient.
